//-- Book Review: "Seven Secrets to Raising a Happy and Healthy Child – The Ayurvedic Approach to Parenting" --// Reviewed by Roberta Waters
by Joyce Golden Seyburn Ms. Seyburn decided to write this book after witnessing the birth of her grandchild. The “secrets” are based on common-sense and heart-propelled parenting. I guess for those whose parenting style is to squeeze in a baby between board meetings, the method of raising a healthy and happy child may seem elusive. The author begins with living in the moment, a good way to start each day, especially if you are responsible for a little one. This lifestyle produces balance and provides for a peaceful emotional, spiritual and physical state. The remainder of the book focuses on Ayurvedic principles. Those who are unfamiliar with this philosophy may find some of the focus to be uncomfortable, but the author strives to present the Ayurvedic concepts of balance and mindfulness in easy to understand terms. This includes good diet, touch, such as massage, and other healthful practices. The chapter focusing on birth was inspiring because it discussed birth as a natural event, rarely requiring medical intervention. She wisely educates that “Many doctors are charming in their office during your prenatal visits but in the delivery room are quite different.” She then notes that prenatals are social visits and warns women to never assume anything in regard to hospitalization and physician care. TCM readers will be pleased to know that “Ayurveda holds that breast-feeding is best for the child and for the mother.” The book is convenient to carry and easy reading. A nice gift for a pregnant friend or new mother. Reviewed by Roberta Waters
