A Thought For Christmas
Do you know what would have happened
If they had been Three Wise Women
Instead of Three Wise Men?
They would have asked directions,
Arrived on time,
Helped deliver the baby,
Cleaned the stable,
Made a casserole,
Brought practical gifts and
There would be Peace On Earth.

TEACHING ABOUT BREASTFEEDING
For breastfeeding to become a cultural norm once more,
it is important to incolude basic message about breastfeeding
in the educational system. These can include:
*Breastfeeding is the normal way for babies to eat and mothers
and babies have the right to breastfeed free of commercial influences.
*Breastfeeding mothers and babies should be welcomed anywhere.
They have the right to breastfeed in schools, religious buildings,
restaurants, public transport, at work, visiting friends, visiting a
hospital or shopping.
Carrying a baby provides both security and stimulus to the baby’s
developing brain.
Although mothers may need to work, babies need their mothers,
especially during the first year of life.
Fathers can provide all the baby care that mothers can,
with the exception of breastfeeding. Fathers can rock, talk with,
change, bathe play with, put to sleep and carry a baby.
Breastfeeding helps prepare the infant for adult foods and
changes to meet the needs of the growing child.
Sleeping with babies is a normal way of caring for them,
not a bad habit that will encourage dependence.
The images of babies bottle-feeding and using pacifiers
are images used to sell products. These products are not
necessary for babies.

THE BIRTH RUSH
Hospitals always scared me because I've seen many relatives die there. I
just knew it wasn't a place to give birth. After many months of research I
finally found a midwife who let me be in charge.
After 21 hours and nine days over our guestimate due date, our daughter
was born at home, in her bag of waters. All 8 lb., 4 oz.. of her. I raved
about that birth for months and months. Many times I cried as I recalled
it. I loved the power it gave me . People who are conformers thought I was
crazy to love labor so much, yet I'd go through it a million times just
for that rush.

MOTHERING WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when I was 19, and was
hospitalized four times with serious symptoms before I had my children. By
the time I became pregnant I was quite healthy, with only a few residual
symptoms: some double vision, weakness and numbness on my left side, and
fatigue.
I felt great during my first pregnancy, and even better during my second.
I had something positive to focus on instead of always seeing myself as
someone with MS. And my body was doing a really good job.
I was concerned about the labour; I thought I might not have the energy to
get through it, so I booked a hospital birth. I was determined to give
birth naturally and I did. It was a fairly short, complication-free labour.
I had a wonderful midwife who seemed to be on the same wavelength as me
even though we never spoke about what I wanted. She supported me in a
squatting position as I pushed Kizzy out; my legs were like jelly by then.
I could hardly hold Kizzy because my arms were too weak, but everything
else was perfect.
In the first few days I was terrified the exhaustion I was suffering would
cause a relapse, but everything went well. Kizzy was a keen breastfeeder
from the start and still is at the age of four!
Dora was born six months ago at home. It was the most amazing experience
of my life, truly spiritual. I was completely in tune with my body and
felt full of love and wonder at the world. There was no pain, just very
strong feelings I had to concentrate hard on.
I was on my feet throughout the labour and birth. It was all over much
quicker than any of us expected. Dora didn't open her eyes properly for
about ten minutes. She breastfed easily, although she found my forceful
letdown hard to cope with once the milk came in.
Having MS hasn't had much effect on my motherhood, except that I maybe
need to rest more than most. I carried Kizzy almost continually until she
was two and a half and I always carry Dora now. Breastfeeding and
attachment parenting have been the key to our success as a family. My
husband, Jim, is totally supportive. I am fulfilled and happy as a mother,
which I never was before, and I believe that is keeping the MS at bay,
keeping me healthy.
I don't feel brave, just doing what feels right.
I used to go to La Leche League meetings when we lived in London.
Now the nearest meeting now is too far to go without a car and I don't
drive. I'm a bit isolated and I'm happy to email friends and encourage
other moms with MS.

FROM THE OTHER SIDE
I had been feeling some odd physical sensations in the hospital, usually when I was breastfeeding my new born son, Ryland.
I would take that time to close my eyes and rest, and several times,
I felt the distinct touch of a hand resting on my shoulder or thigh
or brushing the hair from my forehead. Sometimes, I would hear
a voice behind me, and I would open my eyes expecting a nurse
to be standing next to me, but no one was ever there. The touches
were always gentle and reassuring, and I never felt any fear, so I
figured I must have been starting to dream and I didn’t mention
it to anyone.
After returning home, I was sitting in our living room nursing
Ryland with my eyes closed, and I felt a cat walk across my lap
and down my leg. Something about the motion reminded me
of our cat Ashley, who had died almost two years before. When
I opened my eyes, our cat Zorro was sitting in the other room
licking herself.
Later, still nursing with my eyes half closed, I saw a shadow pass
between me and the light behind me and felt the presence of a man
standing just behind my chair. I recognized the essence of my father,
who had died more than eight years ago. It was then that I realized that
the touches I had felt in the hospital were those of my grandmother
who had died several months before at the age of 102. I had not
recognized her touch because it had been so long since she had been
able to stand on her own and interact in that way.
I smiled to think that all my beloved departed were coming to visit
and see my new son. I believe they were able to cross over into
my world while I was breastfeeding because Ryland was so recently
from whatever place we go between lives, and he acted as sort of
a conduit from the other side.

Worried Moms Bottlefeed
They think breastfeeding is ugly, will de-sexualize their breasts and ruin
their sex lives. They think their husbands don't approve, and they made
the decision to bottlefeed by the first trimester of their pregnancy.
A study of 245 new moms at Hamet Medical Centre in Erie, Pennsylvania ,
found women get breastfeeding information too little and too late, and to
be effective, it must include their partners. Effective campaigns must win
husbands over to the idea of breastfeeding, said Dr Arora, who worked on
the survey as a resident.

BRAS CAUSE PAIN
Bra wearing contributes to painful cysts, breast pain and perhaps breast
cancer.
Dr Robert Mansell, professor of surgery at the University Hospital in
Cardiff conducted a study of 100 women with Dr Simon Cawthorn, a
consulting surgeon at the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol in Britain.
The women were asked to chuck their bras for three months, then wear it
again for three months. Bra-free, the pre-menopausal women found a 7% pain
reduction. Post-menopausal women had less pain relief.
The scientists believe bras suppress the lymphatic system, the vessels
which flush toxic waste from the body. Bras compress the outer upper part
of the breast, where most of the lymph flows. US medical anthropologist
Sydney Ross Singer claims bra use increases breast cancer. The British
scientists say breast cancer is two-thirds higher than 30 years ago, and
bras may be one reason for the epidemic.

WORLD’S LOWEST TEEN PREGNANCY RATE
Teenage pregnancy is a stubborn problem everywhere but in The Netherlands,
which has the lowest teenage pregnancy and abortion rates in the world .
Sweden, comes a close second.
Counseling is the key, combined with liberal sexual attitudes for
healthcare providers, excellent sex education, free supplies of
contraceptives, and accessible termination og pregnancy. Fear of pelvic
examination deters young women so Dutch physicians don't do them. Visits
are devoted to counseling and provision of contraceptives. Pelvic exams
are medically unnecessary.
Nonjudgmental attitudes on the part of providers, confidentiality, and
de-medicalization of the encounter are the three most important aspects to
a system that works. The Dutch approach is to make the first visit for
contraception only for counseling. No mandatory follow-up is demanded and
teenagers have easy access to services at no cost.
The Dutch have a reputation for pragmatism. This applies to their approach
to the touchy issue of adolescent sexuality and contraception. In many
societies, the approach to adolescent sexuality is schizoid: teenagers are
immersed in sexual imagery yet straight talk about sex is scarce. The
United States is an example of such a society, and its teenage pregnancy
rates, though falling, remain higher than industrialized nations. By
contrast, teenagers in Sweden have coitus earlier and more often than do
US teenagers, but with an important difference: they seldom get pregnant.
The forthright Dutch approach accepts that adolescents are sexual beings
and provides them with information and services in a non-threatening way.
When treated as adults, teenagers respond appropriately. The pelvic
examination is not only medically unnecessary before beginning hormonal
contraception but also deters some young women from adopting safe,
effective contraception. Thus, the traditional requirement of a pelvic
examination indirectly leads to unwanted pregnancies and induced
abortions. Young women deserve better.

CABBAGE LEAVES FOR MASTITIS
I use the outside leaves of a green cabbage, though the green grocer lady
told me she uses the inside leaves too and they work just as well. To be
honest I don't know the scientific reason they work so well. You put the
leaves in the
fridge, and apply one cold onto the red spots on your breast. This could
be quite a large area in some cases. The cabbage draws the heat out and
"cooks", then you replace it. Someone told me the acid in the
cabbage
reacts. I can only say it works.
Things age going well on the nursing front. The twins are now 4 1/2 months
and still exclusively breastfeeding. When people drop hints about starting
solids, I am glad to be able to quote the World Health Organization and
UNICEF recommend exclusive breastfeeding until six months.

MORE “OFF THE LINE”!
Top Dentist Sorry for Pushing Fluoride Dr. Hardy Limeback is head of
Preventive Dentistry, University of Toronto, President of the Canadian
Association for Dental Research, and big on apology.
"Poisoning our children was the furthest thing from my mind," he
told U of
T Dentistry faculty and students and apologized for misleading them for
the past 15 years. Mounting evidence of the long-term toxic effects of
fluorosilicates dumped into drinking water reversed his stand. He called
the detrimental health effects "catastrophic".
Most fluoride additives come from the toxic byproducts of the
superphosphate fertilizer industry in Tampa, Florida. They contain
carcinogenic lead, arsenic and radium in addition to fluoride. Dr.
Limeback says fluoride has no beneficial effects and does not belong in
drinking water. Children under three should never use fluoridated
toothpaste, he says, and babies must never receive fluoridated tap water.
"Here in Toronto we've been fluoridating for 36 years. Yet
Vancouver,-
which has never fluoridated, has a cavity rate lower than Toronto's.
Unfortunately, we were wrong."
Dr. Limeback is Canada's leading fluoride authority. The American Centers
for Disease Control continue to promote the use of fluoride in drinking
water as safe and effective.

BREASTMILK HAS INSULIN
An Israeli pediatrician at Haifa's Rambam Hospital discovered that human
mother's milk contains insulin, explaining why formula fed babies are at
risk forcontracting insulin-dependent (type I) diabetes.
Dr. Naim Shehadeh, deputy director of Pediatrics A, analyzed the breast
milk of healthy new mothers aged 25 to 30, who had no history of type I
diabetes. He found breastmilk contains important nutrients, calcium, fat,
protein, sodium, and high levels of the hormone insulin.
Insulin in mother's milk has no effect on babies' blood sugar levels, but
did effect the development of the gastrointestinal system and pancreas
whose islet cells produce insulin. The mucous membrane in the intestine
has receptors for the insulin in breastmilk.
In bottlefeeding, when the mucous membrane in the babe's intestine has no
such receptors, the infant's immune system destroys insulin-producing
cells it mistakenly recognizes as a "foreign invader."
Synthetic insulin must then be injected every day to metabolize the sugar
in the blood.
Shehadeh and his colleagues examined five kinds of formula for sale in
Israel and abroad and found none of them contains insulin.
Cow's milk has a much lower insulin level than that in human mother's milk
and all babies should be breastfed, Shehadeh added. Mothers who give their
babies formula will have a significantly higher risk of having offspring
who will develop type I diabetes, and that children at risk for it can
stave off the disease if they get prophylactic injections of insulin from
an early age.

Disposable Diapers, Disposable Male Fertility
Disposable diapers explain the rising incidence of male infertility and
testicular cancer, say doctors at the University of Kiel in Germany.
Plastic-lined diapers cause heat to build up around the infant's testes,
hampering development at a vital stage. A prolonged and continuous
elevation of testicular temperature by a mean of 1-degree Celsius
(2.1-degrees Fahrenheit) can affect the maturation of the infant testis,
explained the researchers.
The highest temperatures were found among the youngest babies. Testicular
cancer and low sperm counts have been rising in developed countries in the
past 25 years.

Huggies, Pampers or Sterility?
How vulnerable is the developing testis to the external environment?
Professor I.A. Hughes of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of
Cambridge's Addenbrooke's Hospital says there are ill effects of using
traditional plastic-backed 'disposable' diapers on baby boys. A study by
Parstch, Aukamp, and Sipple shows the plastic does not allowing
breathability and cooling for babies. Temperatures inside the diaper get
too high, leading to increased scrotal temperature, which could be an
important contributor towards the decline in male reproductive health
observed in recent years.]

VITAMIN D FOR RICKETS
Nutritional rickets usually results from a deficiency of vitamin D. This
impairs the body's ability to absorb calcium from the diet, resulting in
poor bone development. We produce our own vitamin D when skin is exposed
to sunlight, but in the cold months when there is less sunlight, and our skin is covered, we need extra Vitamin D, found in sardines, cod liver oil
or halibut liver oil apsules.
In North Carolina, 30 children were diagnosed with nutritional rickets in
the ast 10 years. All infants were African-American and breastfed without
supplemental vitamin D. Shelly Kreiter, M.D., of Wake Forest University,
said the lack of vitamin D in their diet and their heavily igmented skin,
predisposed the infants to rickets.
Pediatricians frequently neglect to recommend vitamin D supplements for
breastfed babies or for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Players, DuMaurier or Ectopic?
Women smokers are at higher risk of having an ectopic or tubal pregnancy,
according to a recent study.
In women who smoked around the time of conception this risk was found to
be three and a half times greater. One explanation is that chemicals in
cigarettes hinder the effectiveness of cilia, which sweep the egg from the
ovary down the fallopian tube to the uterus.
