Causes of Pernicious Anemia
Pernicious anemia is a chronic illiness. It is caused by vitamin B12 deficiency dependent on the impaired absorption. Some people include pernicious anemia as any
type of B12 deficiency. However, correctly used it means there is atrophic gastritis and parietal cell loss.
It is also called Biermer's anaemia.
Pernicious anemia was named because it usually was a fatal disease until treatment became known. At first, liver therapy was employed. Later purified vitamin B12 was used.
The main cause of pernicious anemia is autoimmune atrophic gastritis. This problem happens when autoantibodies are directed against parietal cells. These cells are
dimished.
