Joyce's story
Jane's Birth
I had my fifth baby at home with
nursemidwives. My four other children were born in the hospital,
two with physicians and two with midwives. My birth,at home, was
by far the best birthing experience.
I went into labor at about 6:00 am
while I was in the shower, my husband was already at work. I
wasn't 100 % sure this was the real thing, since I contract all the time
and I was two weeks early. I called my husband and warned him that
this could be it. I called my midwife and warned her also. I
had an appointment that am, so I told her I would sit tight and see how
things progressed. By 8:30 am I decided that this was definitely the
real thing. I called my husband to come home and I paged my
midwife. It was the last day of school, so I put the kids on the
bus, telling them that today might be the baby's birthday. My husband
was home by 9:00 and I spoke to my midwife and told her she should come
and I called my birth assistant. I sent my two year old to my
neighbors. My birth team arrived by 10:00. I was having back
labor and was beginning to get more uncomfortable. My oldest came
home and was excited, because she had wanted to be there for the baby's
birth. Everyone was terrific. My midwife and birth assistant
left me alone with my husband as much as possible, nobody told me what I
could or couldn't do. Being at home was the most relaxing feeling,
being where I am most comfortable. By 11:00, I was transitioning,
I could feel the baby's head, My midwife checked me and said try
to break your bag of waters with a little push, I pushed, they broke,
that was 11: 03. I told them the baby was coming, and I delivered
a beautiful baby girl into her Daddy's hands as I stood at the edge of
my own bed with my comfortable flannel sheets at 11:04. The baby
was passed to me and we sat and nursed immediately, It was the
most awesome, powerful experience of my life. My 12 year old was
awestruck. The other kids came home around 12 noon and couldn't
believe the baby was already here. I highly recommend having a home
birth!!
