Herbs and Congestive Heart Failure

In addition to hawthorn, coleus can help control congestive heart failure. A licensed herbalist can tell you that coleus works because it contains foskolin, which is a

substance that helps to dilate blood vessels. It's that very ability that improves the pumping action of the heart.

In fact, in recent clinical trials, forskolin improved heart function in those individuals who suffered with congestive heart failure. This is promising news for those who are searching to find remedies that may lessen their reliance on harsh, synthetic drugs.

Another herb, perhaps less well known also helps to protect and support the pumping action of the heart. This is arjun, a bark extract, used widely in Ayurveda medicine for overall cardiovascular health. It has been used by licensed herbalists as a heart booster as well as an aid to diminish the effects of stress and nervousness.

One of the reasons why it helps with this cardio-health condition is because it acts as a diuretic. In a study which examined the effects of the efficacy of arjun in treating congestive heart failure, more than 40 percent of the cases showed improvement. The recommended serving size of arjun is 500 mg.

If you're at all familiar with herbs, then you probably are already well aware of ginkgo biloba. It's been widely been touted as a great herbal remedy to give your memory a boost. That same mechanism that may help boost your brain function, makes ginkgo an excellent herb for those suffering with congestive heart failure.

Ginkgo improves the flow of blood throughout every area of your body, including of course, your heart. Most licensed herbalists recommend that you take 40 mg of ginkgo three times a day.

When you think heart, one of the first herbs that come to mind is foxglove, Not only have herbalists used it for ages, it has been adapted and adopted by conventional medicine as a vital component of the conventional prescription medication digitalis used to treat congestive heart failure.

Foxglove contains two active ingredients which work in conjunction on this heart condition. First, digitoxin strengthens the cardiac muscle contractions. Then digoxin acts as diuretic on the kidneys. These two components of this herb help the heart to beat stronger and more regularly without requiring the use of extra oxygen, which comes at a premium for those with congestive heart failure.
